Terra Praxis has selected Terrestrial Energy’s Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) as the first candidate heat source vendor for its Repowering Coal program due to its unique capabilities. These include its high-temperature heat supply required for coal-fired boiler replacement, and its capacity to be deployed quickly and at the scale necessary to replace 2 Terawatts of global coal capacity by 2050. According to the agreement, Terrestrial Energy and Terra Praxis will work on a standardized systems interface between the IMSR and coal-fired power plant systems, which they will apply to candidate sites as part of the program to repower coal projects in North America and elsewhere.

The non-profit seeks to accelerate solutions for hard-to-decarbonize sectors, which includes the global fleet of 2,400 coal plants. The solution comes following a strategic collaboration with Microsoft, who helped develop the application. It is being unveiled for the first time in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt at COP27, an annual gathering with world leaders on climate action.

As of 2022, the world has more than 2 terawatts (TWe) of coal-fired electric power plants. Schneider Electric and Terra Praxis will work together to deliver the latest standardized physical system designs and project applications for coal plant owners and investors to support the rapid decarbonization of the world's coal plants by 2050. This will require hundreds of plants to be repowered with carbon-free energy each year, starting in 2025.

To avoid catastrophic climate impacts to people and our planet we must apply our most innovative strategies to the toughest-to-decarbonise parts of the economy, which include aviation, shipping and the single largest emitter of carbon emissions, coal-fired power plants. Coal’s virtues, ironically, make it a historically neglected area of the climate challenge and now the single biggest problem we face – but flip it around and tackling coal-fired generation could present the single biggest decarbonization opportunity on the planet.

Terra Praxis' co-founder Eric Ingersoll joined thought leaders at the first annual Fusion Executive Summit, hosted by Citigroup Clean Energy Transition and Fusion Industry Association. During Climate Week, Microsoft gave a briefing with several partners outlining compelling examples of how Microsoft-enabled digital technologies could accelerate the low-carbon energy transition. The first centered on a collaboration with Terra Praxis, focused on helping coal plant operators determine the best ways to retrofit their facilities to run on carbon-free energy. The idea is to create a replicable way for gathering data to help more than 2,400 coal plants be reconfigured to run nuclear power. The grid infrastructure surrounding these facilities can help developers add this carbon-free energy more quickly, by streamlining permitting, and it will leverage the skills and talents of coal plant workers into the future, said Eric Ingersoll, one of the managing partners and founder of TerraPraxis. "If we don’t have a climate strategy that includes these people, we don’t have a climate strategy," he said.

Microsoft unveiled its plans to launch the Global Renewables Watch yesterday at the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations. Launched in partnership with Planet Labs PBC and The Nature Conservancy, the platform uses artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite imagery to map renewable energy installations everywhere on Earth. In addition, the company is working with Terra Praxis to help facilitate the transition from coal to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.

Non-profit sustainability group Terra Praxis will partner with Microsoft to deliver a digital solution to support the repurposing of over 2,400 coal-fired power plants to run on carbon-free energy. Terra Praxis is looking to combine its expertise in energy with Microsoft to build and deploy a set of tools to automate the design and regulatory approval needed to decarbonize coal facilities with nuclear power. The burning of coal causes more than 40% of global carbon emissions and more than 75% of emissions from electricity generation. As global carbon emissions rebounded in 2021 to their highest level in history, increased use of coal was the main driving factor, reaching an all-time high of 15.3 billion tonnes. According to the International Energy Agency, the world’s consumption of coal is set to rise yet again in 2022.

Terra Praxis is looking to combine its deep expertise in energy with Microsoft to build and deploy a set of tools to automate the design and regulatory approval needed to decarbonize coal facilities with nuclear power, helping transition one of the world’s largest sources of carbon to zero emissions.
